The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education, established in 1969 under the Himachal Pradesh Act No. 14 of 1968, is a government agency responsible for secondary school education in Himachal Pradesh. Originally headquartered in Shimla, it later moved to Dharamshala in January 1983. With Kultar Chand Rana as its first chairman, the board currently operates under the leadership of Dr. Suresh Soni as chairman and Dr. Madhu Chaudhary (HAS) as the appointed Secretary by the Government of Himachal Pradesh.

The board’s primary duties include prescribing curriculum, textbooks, and conducting examinations for various classes and courses such as 8th (Private Capacity), 10th, 10+1, 10+2, J.B.T, and T.T.C. It caters to a significant number of students, with over 5 lakh candidates appearing for the board’s examinations annually. More than 8,000 schools across Himachal Pradesh are affiliated with the board, which establishes 1,650 examination centers throughout the state.

In addition to its examination-related responsibilities, the board also publishes textbooks for classes 1st to 12th. It has established 19 Sale Book Depots/Information Centres across the state, along with a Liaison Office in Shimla, to facilitate the needs of students.

The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education is widely recognized for conducting state-level examinations for the 10th and 12th standards, which take place in March each year. With its commitment to providing quality education and effective administration, the board plays a vital role in the education system of Himachal Pradesh.
